A fifteen year old girl named Nikki has an obsession with a Labrador puppy which leads her to be murdered in her parent's back yard during the snowy holiday season.
She falls onto the streets a surreal city of the dead where memories float freely on transparent screens or "Shards." With no time to grasp what's happened she is hunted by ghoulish, nightmare creatures for reasons she doesn't understand. She is also tracked by a flighty, pixie girl.
Portals of demons, and a path of destruction follow Nikki wherever she goes.
She discovers that she can walk into Shards, entering the memory of anyone she pleases, thereby not only transforming the memory but also shaping the person.
She learns that her presence in the city is considered the greatest tragedy in the city's history as she is personally responsible for thousands of deaths as the direct result of her wild summoning when she arrived.
She is consumed by a personal vendetta against the Harvester- the man with godlike powers who killed her and who has the ability to walk back and forth between the world of the living and the dead. Along the way she is overwhelmed by guilt and develops a need for redemption as she attempts to enter and fix the memories of tormented individuals.
